Welcome to the homepage of the 'What is England?' photography project. The project is taking place in 2010 and is curated by Stuart Pilkington.

The 50 photographers mentioned either side are taking part in the project and each of them will be representing one of the 50 counties in England. Their brief is to represent their own style of photography as well as their nominated county. Some live in the county they represent and some are discovering or rediscovering it for the first time.

On 1st March 2010 the photographs in response to 'Person' will be published on the site. On 1st May the responses to 'Group' will be published, 1st July 'Work', 1st September 'Play', 1st December 'Urban' and lastly 1st February 2011 the word 'Rural'.

The photographers have complete freedom as to how they respond to the above-mentioned assignments. And hopefully by the end of 2010 the 300 images submitted over the course of the year will help to answer the brief 'What is England?'.

If you would like to contact the project please e-mail Stuart at info@whatis england.co.uk or if you would like updates on the project please feel free to follow the What is England? Twitter.

What is England? is a sister project with the the 50 States Project.
