New Competition

Faber & Faber have kindly contributed a hardback edition of Paul Auster's latest novel "The Brooklyn Follies" to the winner of the following competition to celebrate the book's release in the UK on 17th November 2005.

Competition setter Sara Serrao has helped once again with this latest competition and will be the judge.

Please e-mail your entry using the address: [email protected] no later than midnight on 30th October 2005. The winner will then be announced on 3rd November 2005 and an edition of "The Brooklyn Follies" will be posted to the winner the next day so you can read it before it's out in the UK. Anybody, (i.e. from any country), can enter the competition.

All you need to do is choose one of the following options. Please write a short piece/story on any of the following:

1) Have you ever met any particular "character" in your life, someone unforgettable, who was able to affect your life strongly? Tell us your story.

2) Do you think you can really choose about your life or is life driven by Fate?

3) The word folly can be defined as 'a costly undertaking having an absurd or ruinous outcome'. Can you describe any of your own particular follies?

4) What is your idea of heaven, in the book 'The Brooklyn Follies' Tom describes his idea as 'Hotel Existence'. Can you describe yours?

5) Who is your favourite character from an Auster novel and why?

All the questions bar the last one are using themes from the book. There is no limit on how much/little you need to write.

Please e-mail Sara by 30th October 2005 and good luck.
