THE NEW YORK TRILOGY Review by Michael Schwarz First of all my goal is not to review a book or novel by Paul Auster or whatever his real name is. I don't know much about his life, character and his name, but from what I read in books by him, a name to him has a certain role. Whether it's important or not, doesn't matter. He includes his own name (given the fact, it's his own) in the first story of the New York Trilogy. I just finished the book today. It was the first book i read in almost a year and a half. I'm not a big reader. Besides magazines I barely read books. back to the names. It was first confusing to me, that certain names come up in different stories. Especially the first and the last. For example Peter Stillmann, pacing trough paris, haunted by a drunk guy, who's been desperately searching for himself. i tried to connect the stories, trying to fit the times, places and so on together. But those things don't matter, times, places, names. In my opinion, there's no connection between the different stories, sure! There are similarities. All of the narrators are torn apart from life, there's the great darkness, not knowing what to do next. And so on and so forth. There's no real link between the stories, Mr. Auster just tries to confuse me. I could be wrong though and there's something I haven't figured out. Maybe my poor knowledge of English is the key to that problem. I was an exchange student in Housto, Texas, last year and just returned two months ago. I'm 17. This is not a review on the New York Trilogy, I just wanted to say that I enjoyed reading the book. It made me think. I've been in a struggle with myself, not knowing where and who I am ever since I've gotten back from the US. the book gave me, the assurance that at least I'm not lost, that's it's a life long process of developing and maturing. |
