On Sunday 8th September 2002 writers Paul Auster and Salman Rushdie reflected on how September 11th forced a reimagination of the shape of the world. Guest host Linda Wertheimer guided their conversationon All Things Considered, NPR.

On Monday 9th September 2002 Paul Auster wrote a piece called "The City and the Country" for The New York Times, (you'll need to sign up, [it's free], to be able to read it), recently and talked openly about New York and 9/11.

Paul Auster was on the Board of Directors for The Sonic Memorial Project. This nationwide public broadcasting collaboration involved numerous individuals and organizations that came together to create The Sonic Memorial Project. Together they gathered sound and produced stories that chronicled the lives as well as the loss of this chapter of American history. These stories were broadcast as a series on public radio throughout 2002 with Sonic Memorial specials airing the week of Wednesday 11th September 2002.

On Friday 13th September 2002 'The Story of my Typewriter' was published. This is the story of Paul Auster's typewriter. The typewriter is a manual Olympia, more than 25 years old, and has been the agent of transmission for the novels, stories, collaborations, and other writings Auster has produced since the 1970s, a body of work that stands as one of the most varied, creative, and critcally acclaimed in recent American letters. It is also the story of a relationship. A relationship between Auster, his typewriter, and the artist Sam Messer. Thank you to Klaus Nolting for this.

Robert Zahornicky accompanied his photograph in the 'Blind Photography' exhibition with a section from 'The City of Glass'.

Fans of French TV personality Bernard Pivot will have wanted to huddle in front of their sets on Thursday 19th September 2002, when CUNY TV presented two special programs commemorating last Spring’s visit to New York City by Pivot, the popular host of “Apostrophes,” “Bouillon de Culture,” and “Double Je.” The latter, "Double Je", includes a meeting with Paul Auster.

Paul Auster and Peter Beard, (famed for once carousing with Truman Capote), hosted a party in New York for the magazine 'Modern Painters' at the Cheim and Read Gallery on Tuesday 24th September 2002. Auster wrote about the book 'Modern Painters Writers On Artists': "Writers on Artists is an exquisite collection. Great writers, great artists, but great for its design as well. This is one of the most attractive art books I have ever seen. You want to hold it in your hands, eat it up with your eyes." Now available in bookstores across North America and the UK.

Paul Auster attended a book signing of 'The Book of Illusions' at Elliott Bay, 101 S Main Street, Seattle, WA on Friday 4th October 2002 at 7:30pm. LP has written to say "PA did a reading at Elliot Bay Books in Seattle on Friday evening (Oct. 4th). Fairly large turnout - they had to open up the walls to the cafe so the overflow could watch/listen. After being told by the MC that PA would not do a Q&A, PA read a chunk from Chapter 5 since Seattle is mentioned in there. After he read people lined up to do the signing thing. I felt odd because I had him sign four things - although some people behind me had way more books, one person had at least 12 items. Babbled a line or two to him, but I probably didn't make much sense. And that was pretty much it. I wasn't expecting too much and didn't get too much."

Paul Auster's new novel 'The Book of Illusions' will be out in paperback in the UK on Monday 7th April 2003. Faber & Faber have confirmed that Paul Auster won't be visiting the UK for a book signing.
