MR VERTIGO

I read this book with much enjoyment. Admittedly, the subject is far fetched but the narrative contains so much human understanding and empathy, that the impossibility of "levitation" becomes a secondary consideration. The characters in the book become real although they are in fact most peculiar. Who would sell his nephew at the age of nine to a "charlatan" performer of life shows, then try and rob him at a later stage, killing Master Yehudi in the process? Who would expect the boy to have a happy marriage? Finally who could predict him to join his master's former girl friend, Mrs Weatherspoon? Mr Vertigo is the name of a Chicago night club founded by Walt Rally, the main character in the book, after his successful "career" as a ....gangster.
This book is a brilliant narrative of an unlikely story. It is partly written with tongue in cheek. But so much in life should be viewed in that way anyhow!
As the author said in a recent radio interview: "I don't know where my personages come from but I follow their development with interest!" An entertaining read with unexpected twists written in very clear and
uncomplicated language making it useful for school or university literature study.
